Ise-Shima Resort Management Co., Ltd. (Mie Prefecture), located in Mie Prefecture, will be taking on the challenge of creating a "circular food chain" that focuses on resource circulation as one of its initiatives toward the SDGs for 2025.
Ise-Shima Resort Management Co., Ltd. has been working on SDGs since 2019 and is carrying out various activities. As part of this, in 2020, we started an initiative to compost food waste generated from the dishes served at the facilities operated by our company, such as spiny lobster and abalone, which are representative of the abundant marine resources of Miketsukuni, at the Ise-Shima Winery of Ise Utsukushikuni Brewery in Ise City, and recycle it as fertilizer for grape cultivation.
As a new initiative for fiscal 2025, we have begun this circular approach by cultivating grapes on the grounds of Toba Hotel International Shiojitei.
We hope to be able to offer our customers wines produced through this recycling process in the near future.
We will continue to strive to operate a sustainable hotel that coexists with the abundant nature of Ise-Shima National Park and deepens our ties with the local community, aiming to achieve a sustainable future.
This is an initiative that connects food waste eaten in Ise-Shima to the soil, and is connected to the next generation with an awareness of resource circulation that is close to Ise-Shima. The composted fertilizer contains minerals and calcium, making it ideal as a rich soil fertilizer. The bamboo used for the grape trellis is "abandoned bamboo." Bamboo puts pressure on the surrounding trees and causes them to become overgrown, which has an impact on the natural environment, such as biodiversity and the landscape. Some of the bamboo used is also from the bamboo that grows on the NEMU RESORT grounds.
We are trying to create a cycle in which food waste such as spiny lobster and abalone shells from the dishes served at Toba Hotel International, Shiojitei, and NEMU RESORT, which are operated by Ise-Shima Resort Management, is composted and used as fertilizer for the vineyards from which the wine is made, and the wine made from the harvested grapes is then served to our guests. We grow a variety of grapes, including Chardonnay and grapes that are used to make red wine. Next year, wine made from the compost will be available to enjoy with your meal at the restaurant at Toba Hotel International.
There are 12 SDGs, but at Ise-Shima Resort Management Co., Ltd., we are prioritizing our efforts by focusing on three goals that are closely related to our company: "14. Responsible Consumption and Production," "15. Protect the Abundance of Marine Life," and "3. Protect Green Spaces."
With the aim of creating a natural environment where creatures can easily live, employees regularly clean up the beaches on the grounds of NEMU RESORT and Toba International Hotel. In addition, as an effort to reduce food waste, unattractive cheesecakes are transformed into other sweets and offered.
Under the slogan "SDGs from NEMU!", we hold an experiential SDGs "retreat event" every year, making the most of the abundant nature of NEMU RESORT, in order to connect the world to a sustainable world and a better future for the next generation. We also cooperate with local governments, private companies, and local schools to contribute to the education of the next generation by holding classes on food education and environmental conservation, and by providing tours of facilities.
As part of our support activities to protect the blessings of the sea and environmental conservation, we hold charity events during seasonal events such as Christmas and Tanabata, and use the proceeds to support seaside reforestation activities. We also support local disability welfare businesses' "employment and exchange projects aimed at realizing community coexistence."
We have implemented an "internal proposal system" that allows all employees to make proposals directly to the general manager. Improvement proposals and new proposals are possible in ES, CS, and various other areas, and we strive to adopt and implement the submitted proposals as much as possible.
In addition, we have been holding an "SDGs Idea Contest" every year since 2020. Each employee understands the SDGs and reports on the SDGs activities being undertaken in each section, as well as new initiatives for each fiscal year.
