The official name of the shrine is Kusunokigozenyabashira Shrine, and its deities are Izanagi no
Mikoto, Izanami no Mikoto, and Kusuhime no Mikoto (the Saio of Amaterasu).
The origin of this shrine dates back to the time of the XNUMXth Emperor Keiko, when Princess Kusu, who
was assigned to serve at the shrine, went on an errand to Shima in the Land of Miketsukuni to obtain
food to be presented to the shrine. When she arrived at a small village, she was enchanted by the
beauty of the lapping waves and decided to call the village Namihari. This is said to have given rise to
the name Nanbari.
The villagers, including fishermen, planted a camphor tree there to honor the virtue of the princess
and enshrine her.
The shrine is celebrated on January 1 of the lunar calendar, and is very crowded with visitors who
come to pray for easy delivery, prolongation of life, and good health.
